Mary Davis Jr. – haar muziek klinkt zoals haar naam: warm, soulful, zomers en een tikkeltje eigenwijs. Mary staat voor soul, Davis voor jazz. De Jr. voegde miss Mary herself, Marleen van Emmerik, hieraan toe en staat voor haar eigen ingrediënt dat de verschillende elementen bindt. Dit vormt een fijne mix waaruit liedjes ontstaan die blijven hangen en bijzonder grooven. Daarin is de invloed te horen van haar “partner in crime”, bassist Hugo den Oudsten, die samen met Marleen de nummers schreef voor het nieuwe album “New Day” dat in mei 2012 verschijnt.

Deze combinatie vormt dan ook de basis van de songs: de stem en de bas. Opvallend zijn de lekker getimede koortjes, veelal door Marleen zelf ingezongen in haar eigen huiskamer, die de muziek een uniek karakter geven. Beïnvloed door talloze muzikale helden, zoals ze zelf omschrijft “van Billie tot Beyoncé”, laat ze het palet aan kleuren in haar stem horen. Mary is niet bang om te improviseren en geeft blijk van kennis van de jazz- en soulhistorie, wat elk optreden tot een unieke belevenis maakt.

Marleen van Emmerik (afgestudeerd aan het conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2008) bracht in 2009 onder de naam Mary Davis Jr. haar eerste EP “Lovin’ It” uit, gevolgd door een tour op jazz- en poppodia. Niet alleen met haar eigen band, maar ook met talloze andere bands en formaties trad ze de afgelopen jaren op. In 2011 kwam er een nieuwe single uit met het nummer “Perfect” uitgebracht door WedgeView, een voorproefje van het nieuwe album, dat in mei 2012 uitkomt.

Mary Davis Jr. – her voice sounds like her name: warm, soulful and in a way a little familiar, like you’ve heard her sing sometime before, but you can’t remember where or when. It’s sweet, but with an edge and surprisingly bright. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Mary Davis has been working on her music for the past few years, performing at many venues and festivals throughout the country, gaining experience while being surrounded by numerous accomplished musicians.  In 2009 she released her first EP called “Lovin’ It”. Mary Davis followed that up with organizing a small tour, playing on different pop and jazz stages and appearing in various radio shows.

Brought up in a musical environment, Mary started singing at a very young age. She loved -and still does- to listen to old spirituals, r&b and jazz singers and this made her love for soul grow more and more. Once she discovered how to record, multi-track, and mix voices on the computer at the age of 14, her true love for recording vocal harmonies started to bloom. This is a distinct characteristic of her songs: the richly arranged background vocals.

Listening to jazz records from her father’s collection really opened her ears and eventually took her a step further, with her eventually deciding to develop her talent in jazz singing as well.  This later led Mary to  spend a short - but very inspiring - period getting private vocal study in New York city, during her studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

The combination of these various influences in her background are the roots of her own particular style; mixing the different music genres and creating something fresh. Mary Davis Jr. seems quite in her element in doing this and her knowing how to use it well makes her vocal style  very captivating. Furthermore, she is no stranger to vocal improvisation, and ardently uses all the colors from her ‘musical palette’ to paint you a marvelous picture.
